Simple Home Decoration-Today I’ll be sharing the sources of our new dining room gallery wall and giving you sneak peeks of the minimal holiday décor popping up here at Mountainside Home.
Simple Home Decoration-Our dining wall was bare for close to 4 years. I’d lived with it for so long! One day I became so frustrated and felt the need to solve the problem immediately.
This is how I decorate because by nature I truly am not a decorator. I’m a photographer. Capturing beauty comes easily for me, but creating it is another thing entirely. It takes a lot of time and visual research for me to decorate a space. I asked around and did a poll on Instagram and eventually found something I loved: the tri-style gallery set of a popular online framer.
But unfortunately, it wasn’t within our budget. My friend Karla of Raka Home recently told me about how she made a gallery wall using Ikea Ribba frames and custom mats from Mat Board and More.
I thought we could mimic the look of these expensive frames using Karla’s technique and let me tell you- we loved the way they turned out! We chose the larger frame – the 24×36 3/4 and we bought three of them. For the mats, we chose ones with lots of white space – we wanted to add visual interest on our wall, but not overpower the space with large photos. I debated about what images to place in the frames for weeks.
Did I want abstract art, stock photos, family photos? In the end, I decided that I wanted the images to be meaningful. I found our film images from a 2017 trip to the Rocky Mountains. I knew I had made the right decision after my husband hung the finished product on the wall and both of my children looked up and gasped. Lesson learned. Print your photos folks!
Simple Home Decoration-We are still adding the finishing touches to our holiday décor around here, but I’ll share a few images of what we have so far along with our completed gallery wall. Minimal Scandi-Inspired House Tour-We don’t do a lot of home tours here on EHD (that aren’t our very own projects, of course), but this one is special. Years ago, I had a design assistant, Samantha Gluck, who worked on two projects with me: Joy’s studio and Joanna Goddard’s apartment.
She was a long-time reader who entered an Instagram styling contest of mine and won (5 years ago!) and when I saw her winning photo (and stalked her feed) I said, “Hey…do you want to work with me?” I LOVED her style and she did such a great job in every way (I liked her personally a lot, too). If she didn’t live in Orange County with two small kids and have a thriving career already, I would absolutely beg that she work with me again.
She recently finished designing her own home and I thought it would be fun to feature because I love it and feel some sort of pride looking at these photos (I had nothing to do with it, it just makes me so happy when former employees do such beautiful work). The house, built in the 1970s, was a bit of an overhaul for Samantha and her family. “We knew that with two small kids, we really didn’t want to be living in the house while the renovation was happening, but we also couldn’t afford to float two mortgages for very long, so we needed to move pretty quickly,” she says. “I worked on the design while we were in escrow so that basically as soon as we closed, we could get started on the remodel, which took four months. I knew I wanted to take my time with the decorating, though.
Usually, when working on a client’s project, there’s pressure to get things wrapped up, because of course! No client wants to live mid-project for very long, understandably. It’s curated but not pretentious and has a lovely mix of pieces that are DIY, vintage, from big box stores and custom. It feels warm yet minimal and clean. “The house overlooks parkland and as such, I really wanted to go with a mostly neutral, natural California aesthetic; a bit earthy without veering boho,” says Samantha. Okay, now that we have a bit of the backstory, let’s dive in the room by room.
LIVING ROOM
While the living room is such a breath of fresh air, that huge embroidery wall hanging is definitely an eye-catcher and SHE MADE THAT HERSELF. WHAT? I need to know the DIY on that one/become an embroidery pro ASAP because I’m crushing on that hardcore. This piece was her first attempt at something this large scale (she’s only done small pieces prior) and man is it beautiful. “When we partially opened up the wall between the kitchen and living room, we were left with the tall wall space above the sofa that I knew I’d need a cool, unique piece to fill,” says Samantha. “I’ve done embroidery for years, but on a much smaller scale. I’m not sure how I got the idea, but one day it dawned on me that rather than shopping for a piece for that wall, it would be cool to have something I made myself and that doing a really blown-up embroidery would be a fun experiment. I plan on experimenting with more pieces like this!” How cool is that? I also just love how her kitchen is so open to her family room because as a mom with two kids, too, I know how crucial that is.Inspired House Tour
Samantha’s home is a great testament that staying in a “safe” neutral colour palette doesn’t equal boring. She kept it bright and light, but with pops of blues, greens and blushes with a lot of wood to warm it up and black to keep it feeling modern. The house is a split level and most of the rooms open up to each other in some way, so she wanted to use the same wall colour for soft visual transitions.
“As a designer,” Samantha adds, “I like to have the flexibility to change things up with my accessories and I find that having a white backdrop makes it easier to do that.” I totally get that.Inspired House Tour

2020 Southern Living Idea House
2020 Southern Living Idea House-You may have seen several photos floating around of this year’s Southern Living Idea House, but I always think it’s fun to study them and share a few details to notice. We may not all live in a gorgeous white house by the sea, but there are often small things that we can replicate or draw inspiration from for our own homes.
The 2020 idea house was designed by Heather Chadduck–one of my favourites–and is located in Amelia Island, Florida.
2020 Southern Living Idea House
- No skimping on style in these halls and stairways. This is an area I often overlook, but I love how she repeated statement lighting in the entry/hallway. My first thought would’ve been to choose one statement light and fill in with can lights but this makes such an impact leading from one space to another.
- Long hall? Use multiple consoles.
- That long brown and white runner has been getting lots of attention online. She had several smaller rugs sewn together. Such a smart idea!
- Tassels dress up any door.
- I like the idea of using an iron handrail as they did in the back stairwell. Simple, pretty and functional.
- She created a (beautiful) gallery wall to balance out the door on the other side of the fireplace. (Love that picture hanging system. .)
- Not every end table has to go on the “end”. I like how she floated an antique pedestal table in front of the settee.
- Fill your fireplace with natural elements during the Summer–or year-round, if you use yours as little as we do. . . 😉
- I’ll never tire of layered rugs. (Also helps to keep the thinner one in place.) 2020 Southern Living Idea House
- Well, this backsplash is something but if you’re looking for a less permanent way to replicate it, like this one could be fun.
- Everybody needs a dish pantry like this. I do, of course, love the idea of using pretty baskets and jars to hold everyday items. But, truthfully, the best idea I can probably replicate here is to stick in a glass jar and call it a day. 🙂 2020 Southern Living Idea
- Do you see a theme here? I’m a fan of the wallpaper on top with painted trim/cabinetry/walls on the bottom.
- When wallpaper is the star, you can keep your mirrors simple and small.
- Monogrammed hand towels elevate the whole look.
- Did you catch that the wallpaper is repeated on the back of the roller shade in the last picture?
- Simple beds dressed up in lots of fabric in these bedrooms. This could be a good solution if you have a more traditional bed but want a change. Even if a custom canopy isn’t in the cards, you can soften up a headboard by draping a pretty blanket or piece of fabric over the back.
- That bunk room! Love a wallpapered ceiling–and a fun light–in a small space.
- A small runner between the bunks adds a nice layer of texture.
- I like how a pair of smaller sconces were mounted lower on the brick fireplace as a way to add lighting without worrying about lamps/cords.
- A big mirror above a pretty bar cart always makes for a nice porch vignette and opens up space.
- No outdoor rug is necessary! Great idea to stain every couple of boards to create a stripe effect on the porch floor.
- A swing bed is officially on my “someday/eventually list”. Zzzzzzz.
- Painted garage doors are also on my radar.
